In 1887 Fostoria Glassworks was first located in Fostoria, Ohio, but due to a lack of natural resources, they later moved to Moundsville, WV. In 1891, the company built a furnace capable of firing 14 pieces that continued to produce glass until 1972. Fostoria soon emerged as leader in American glassware. Fostoria began marketing lines of colored dinnerware and stemware pieces. Although many of Fostoria's competitor's were forced out of business during the Great Depression, innovative marketing and business savvy managers allowed Fostoria to survive. Following the Second World War, the demand for casual and elegant dinnerware would increase to an all time high. Throughout the 1950's and 1960's, Fostoria introduced more lines of beautiful crystal. They also began publishing a consumer direct magazine, "Creating with Crystal." Throughout the 1970's, foreign competition increased and Fostoria sold its stock to the Lancaster Colony Corporation. The factory was closed in 1983. The Fostoria name is indicative of an American legend and Fostoria pieces remain highly collectible.
